What do you enjoy about working at SKYCITY?
What I enjoy about working at SKYCITY is the sense of community and belonging within the business. As one of my Hiring Managers likes to say – SKYCITY is like its own little city amongst Auckland City. It is hard to walk a few metres within SKYCITY without seeing a familiar face or being greeted with a smile or hello. As SKYCITY is a hospitality and entertainment provider it is a fun and enjoyable place to work. There are always activities and events that take place that employees can be a part which foster a great work environment and there are also activities that support the wider community.
What would you say to anyone considering joining your team or applying for a job like yours?
It is important to have good relationship building skills as my role is very people centric. You would need to also be adaptable and flexible with the changes of the business as it is very dynamic. Being an efficient worker and always thinking about process improvement is also important as there can be a high volume of work.
Which of SKYCITY’s employee benefits do you enjoy most?
The subsidised health insurance through Southern Cross and the $2.50 staff meals at 24/7 which is our staff dining restaurant are excellent benefits. I also make a lot of use of the discounted dry cleaning and clothing alteration services as I am a bit of a shopaholic when it comes to clothing.
Is there anything about SKYCITY that makes it different to other work places?
As SKYCITY is a large business, there are many departments, which is a representation of how diverse the business is. There are many different opportunities for career advancement whether it be within casino, food and beverage, corporate or other departments.
Where were you born/raised and how long have you lived in Auckland?
I was born in the Philippines and moved to New Zealand at age 4. When I was 16 years old my family moved to Canada and I stayed there for 4 years before I decided to move back to New Zealand without my family and have been here since. Despite the migration from place to place, I have always considered New Zealand my home.
