Lee - Recruitment Communications Coordinator, SKYCITY Auckland

Meet Lee, Recruitment Communications Coordinator at SKYCITY Auckland. Lee is a recent grad who joined us earlier this year to work on the communications and marketing for the Recruitment team.

What's your current role at SKYCITY and how long have you worked at SKYCITY?

I sit within the Recruitment team as the Communications Coordinator and I've been at SKYCITY for almost a year now! – about 10 months.

Briefly describe your current role

I help with the communications and marketing side of things for the Recruitment team. Content creation for the SKYCITY Careers’ social media, digital marketing, and some general admin are some of the work I do. It’s a pretty broad role, and I find that no two days are really the same which keeps everything enjoyable.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

I enjoy that I get to work on communications and marketing in this role as they are the fields I'm passionate about. I also enjoy being creative and I like that this role allows for that. My current role is very relevant to my University studies so I get to exercise my learnings through my job which is great.

My team has also been supportive of me and so has the wider teams that I get to work with within SKYCITY.

What sorts of challenges do you encounter in your work?

As the work that I do is very visible to the public eye, and we do have a big following for all SKYCITY Careers’ channels, I need to be careful with the content we share and to make sure that it's spot on - from the messaging to visuals and to the overall delivery.

What did you do before you joined SKYCITY?

I was studying Public Relations & Marketing at Waikato University while also working part-time at a New World supermarket in Hamilton. I graduated in December 2016 and soon joined SKYCITY in February 2017.

How did you find the transition between University life and the full-time work life?

The change from a more laid-back University schedule to a full-time work schedule took some time to adjust to, but once I had the routine down it didn’t seem hard at all.

Certain key elements of University definitely carried over such as your problem solving skills, building effective relationships, strategic thinking and other important soft skills that you learn throughout your studies. And of course the theories that you’ve learnt which you apply in your work.

Sometimes I miss having more free time that a University schedule affords you, but I definitely don’t miss those homework assignments!

What do you enjoy about working at SKYCITY?

I enjoy that SKYCITY is a big organisation and there’s a real sense of community in the workplace. I’m fortunate that in my line of work I’ve been able to spend time with many different areas of work at SKYCITY. From our kitchens, restaurants, hotels, convention centre, casino, corporate and the Sky Tower, I always felt that there’s a sense of belongingness within the teams which is really great to see.

Also, because SKYCITY is a large organisation, the opportunities to grow within the same company are abundant. The business is always evolving which makes it a vibrant place to work at.

Which of SKYCITY’s employee benefits do you enjoy most?

We get so many great benefits at SKYCITY that I can’t just say one! The dry cleaning service we have is well-priced and very convenient as it’s situated in-house.

Our 24/7 employee restaurant is great too! The 24/7 team has been doing a great job in putting out good food and at $2.50 for a meal, you really can’t beat it.

The discounted car-parking is also awesome. It’s underground, secured and there are always plenty of spaces. Generally, if you work in the CBD, parking for you would probably be a major hassle - but our SKYCITY carparks make it a non-issue for employees.

Is there anything about SKYCITY that makes it different to other work places?

SKYCITY is a diverse company and there are career opportunities for any field of work. I’ve been able to meet people who have been with SKYCITY for many years, and even someone who has been here since SKYCITY’s opening! It’s great to see that SKYCITY provides real opportunities for progression and I enjoy that I get to tell those stories as part of my work.

There’s also always something exciting happening at SKYCITY which makes the workplace environment fun and enjoyable.

Where were you born/raised and how long have you lived in Auckland?

I was born in Manila, Philippines and then moved to Auckland with my family when I was 11. After a year, we moved to Hamilton where I lived for 10 years before moving back to Auckland to take my job at SKYCITY.

What do you do outside of work?

I enjoy being active – so doing activities like exploring the outdoors and going to the gym. I’m also passionate about cars and I enjoy working on and driving my cars when I can.
