Hannah May - Barista and Training Host, Gusto at the Grand

Meet Hannah, Barista and Training Host at Gusto at the Grand. After following her partner to Auckland in pursuit of her dream job, Hannah decided to apply at SKYCITY after hearing good things about us. Having been at SKYCITY for eight months, she shares what working here is like...

Can you describe your role?

My role is in hospitality. So in essence it’s about providing a professional and joyful experience to all our guests. Working in hospitality, you must be accepting and embrace of all from far and wide with open arms.

I work the morning shift (starting at 5:30-6:00am) and I’m quite often the first face our guests see. I try and make this encounter a joyful experience and take my role in ensuring that all guests leave with a smile.

I enjoy embracing and learning about where our guests have travelled from and learning from their experiences. My role is mainly breakfast/ coffee based, so making sure all those who are in need of a morning fix are greeted with a good quality service is important. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

How long have you been at SKYCITY?

I've been at SKYCITY for eight months.

What do you enjoy most about your current role and what challenges to you encounter? I’m a people person. I love interacting with guests and other SKYCITY employees.

I love how SKYCITY is a very hands on company with their employees and helps them grow to get to their full potential.

However it can be challenging at those busy times, as I can imagine it would be for all other busy and vibrant companies. I’m just blessed to be working with a good team in which we jell well together. It helps to smooth those busy times. What did you do before you joined SKYCITY?

Before I was with SKYCITY I worked in admin outside of Auckland. But when my partner got her job in the city we both decided to relocate. I wanted to join a company which I knew would not only value their customer, but also their employees. I had previously heard good things about SKYCITY and the many benefits for their staff. This encouraged me to apply for the role in Gusto.

What do you enjoy about working at SKYCITY? There are so many people from so many different backgrounds. It’s very diverse and multicultural. Working with all to become a team.

I also love its central location as I live in the CBD and the convenience is great. I often will come home on my breaks and enjoy a coffee or some food with my partner and then head back to work. It's those moments throughout the day that mean a lot.

What would you say to anyone considering joining your team or applying for a job like yours? SKYCITY does have a lot of benefits which I would recommend for anyone thinking of joining to research.

It’s also a company that has so many different sectors. Anyone can find a role that will suit them. Do your research and maybe talk with one of our advisors to pick the best compatible role for you.

Where were you born/raised and how long have you live in Auckland? I was born in England and raised in south Wales. About two years ago I arrived in New Zealand to travel and met my wonderful partner. We’re now planning on staying here for the long run and her family have embraced me with love. I’m very proud of where I came from and miss home very much, however New Zealand has been good to me and Kiwis are very welcoming. Friends and family are equivalent to wealth in Kiwis’ perspective. It’s a beautiful moral. What do you do outside of work? On my days off I will either do some gardening or spend the day with my partner exploring parts of New Zealand we haven’t yet been to. Other than that we quite simple go to the gym and enjoy each other’s company.
