We sat down with Carly Holmes who is currently a Procurement Coordinator for SKYCITY and asked what she does within her role and why she enjoys being part of the SKYCITY whanau.

How long have you been at SKYCITY?

I started at SKYCITY in February 2015 as a Customer Service and Supply Chain Representative. I then moved into a Purchasing Coordinator role and now in my third year, I am a Procurement Coordinator. Before joining SKYCITY I worked within the transport industry which was mostly in the quarries, so transitioning to corporate hospitality has been a massive change, but definitely a positive one.

What does your role entail?

As a Procurement Coordinator I assist Procurement Managers in finding foods and services from suppliers which is often via a tender process and contract negotiation ensuring best value for SKYCITY. My main focus is in the food category however procurement covers areas from beverage to marketing and gaming. Procurement assists and guides internal stakeholders in finding best fit suppliers for our required goods and services, while actively managing and strengthening relationships both internally and externally.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I really enjoy all the learning and development opportunities that have been presented to me in my role. Within this role I am able to build relationships both internally with stakeholders and externally with our suppliers which I feel give a personal touch to everything I do in my role.

What sort of challenges do you encounter within your role?

Due to the diverse range of food outlets within the business, one of the main challenges I face is ensuring each outlets needs are met to their full potential, what could be good for main kitchen may not be suited for a signature restaurant.

What do you enjoy most about working at SKYCITY?

SKYCITY has many employees from all different walks of life and is a company that 100% embraces that. When walking down Federal St or back of house (staff area), I feel like I am in a place where everyone knows everyone, and even if you don’t know them, you know it won’t be long before you do. Coming from another country (Melbourne, Australia) with not many family members over here it can be really hard sometimes but everyone at SKYCITY welcomes you with open arms into the whanau.

What advice would you give to anyone considering joining your team or applying for a job at SKYCITY?

If you work hard and put your best foot forward, SKYCITY can offer many things for you to develop both professionally and personally. You will be part of a team that is a vital part of SKYCITY’s operation dealing with all aspects of the business. You will love it!

What SKYCITY employee benefits do you enjoy the most?

Parking in town wouldn’t be possible without our staff car park. Public transport isn’t always convenient so being able to have a subsidised car park ensures everyone within the business can afford to park at work if needed.

24/7 Staff Cafe- $2.50 meals!! Even the drinks are sold at cost price, it is seriously the best food at the best price. It eat at 24/7 most days and believe that this is the place that brings everyone together. No matter who you are in the business, or where you work, you love food and this is where everyone can go to share this love.

SKYCITY has helped guide and develop my careers from operations to corporate which I personally think is a great benefit. I was able to see pathways within the structure of my group to further develop my career here.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to spend time with my friends and family when I’m not at work. I also enjoy music and dancing to it. And yes, I also love to watch the Essendon Bombers (AFL- Aussie Rules)
