Kunwar is someone who has developed his skills and his career exceptionally within SKYCITY. He has worked here for 8 years and is now the Assistant Manager of VIP Casino Restaurants (Eight and Baccarat). He started at SKYCITY as a part-time Busser in Conventions and Out Catering. He then moved his way up to the Team Leader for the staff cafe (24/7) before becoming Duty Manager in VIP Casino Restaurants and his most current role of Assistant Manager. We sat down with him to have a quick chat about what he enjoys about working at SKYCITY.
What does your current role entail?
In my role I assist the Restaurant Manager with all aspects of the VIP Casino Restaurant’s operations. I support the outlets to ensure the delivery of exceptional service, products and a memorable experience for all of our customers.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
I enjoy helping my team to ensure that they have all the required resources they need to deliver exceptional service and give out patrons and outstanding experience. It gives me great pleasure to interact with people from all over the world having different cultural aspects, and every day, you learn something new which is great.
What sorts of challenges do you encounter?
The most challenging part of my role is managing host responsibility because we serve a high volume of patrons daily. We all work together as a team to ensure that there are no issues but at the same time ensuring that our customers are having a great time while they’re here. I appreciate the challenges that I have in my role as it keeps my interest and makes me think outside the box.
What did you do before you joined SKYCITY?
SKYCITY has been my first place of work, I haven’t worked anywhere else. However, I was pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management in New Plymouth from PIHMS (Pacific International Hotel Management School) which I graduated from in 2010 and then moved to Auckland and started here.
What do you enjoy about working at SKYCITY?
The thing I really enjoy about working at SKYCITY is the working environment, it is such a fun place to work and it’s like home for me where we all work as a family. I also really enjoy that there is so much opportunity with the learning and development programmes we have to offer our employees.
What advice would you give to anyone considering a role at SKYCITY?
In my opinion I think that anyone joining a team at SKYCITY needs to be proactive and ready to accept any challenges that may arise. If you are prepared to constantly learn then you would be perfect. Always ask questions and be friendly and open to building relationships.
Is there anything in your opinion that makes SKYCITY to other work places?
Although I have never worked anywhere else, from my perspective I think that SKYCITY has a very unique environment with so many people that are willing to help you grow personally and professionally. I also think that we are a very systematic organisation that is very organised and all employees know what to do and who to talk to if they need something which makes our business run smoothly.
