SKYCITY Chefs lead the way at the NZ Hospitality Championships!

The SKYCITY Toque d'Or Team

The NZ Hospitality Championships took place earlier last month, which saw some of our chefs competing and winning during the four day event! Over 1,000 entrants competed in more than 80 different classes, which ranged from school level through to open classes for industry professionals.

SKYCITY was represented by first year apprentices through to pastry and commis chefs. All up the chefs won 10 bronzes, 6 silvers and 7 gold/class winning awards.

Some of the stand out performances were:

Zach Meads won gold in the Chatham Islands on a Plate category, with his former lecturer, which saw them prepare an entrée and main course out of supplied ingredients from the Chatham Islands and sponsor Fresh As. Zach, who won Commis Chef of the year at last year’s New Zealand Hospitality Championships, is now a Commis Chef at The Sugar Club.

The SKYCITY Toque d’Or Team (pictured above), made up of Apprentices Alex Southwick, Sam Heaven, Brenna Lee, won the NESTLÉ Toqued’Or Innovation award. Our team won because of their use of a Maggi gravy powder in fudge, which created a pleasant umami flavour sensation.

Second year apprentice Sam Heaven (pictured on the right above), was the class winner for the World Skills – Back of House class and will now represent New Zealand in the World Skills final in Russia in August 2019!

Orbit Chefs

Our Orbit chefs picked up 11 awards and certificates between them, which included sliver in the live venison, live salmon and live dessert classes.

Congratulations to all our SKYCITY chefs for your fantastic achievements.
