Richard Seldon - Executive Manager, Food & Beverage - Signature Restaurants


We've recently caught up with Richard Seldon, our Executive Manager, Food & Beverage - Signature restaurants. He oversees the operations and strategic development of our award-winning restaurants such as Depot, Gusto at the The Grand, MASU and more! Richard has been with us for three months, and we talked about how he's finding it so far.

Can you describe your role?

I oversee the day to day running of and strategic development of our signature restaurants’ Depot, Federal Delicatessen, MASU by Nic Watt, The Grill by Sean Connolly, Gusto at The Grand, Orbit, Peter Gordon’s The Sugar Club and Bellota and Sky Café.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

The people at SKYCITY have been incredibly welcoming, I enjoy the opportunity to learn and develop in an organisation with so many moving parts.

What sorts of challenges do you encounter?

Development of teams & people, recruiting top talent, maintaining and improving on the already high standards set by SKYCITY.

What did you do before you joined SKYCITY?

I was living in London for 15 years working as an Operations Director.

Unitec – Chef training and Chef apprenticeship.

What do you enjoy about working at SKYCITY?

There are opportunities to evolve both professionally and personally and the people who work at SKYCITY.

What would you say to anyone considering joining your team or applying for a job like yours?

- Be prepared to work hard

- Be open-minded and listen

- Challenge yourself and others

- Roll your sleeves up and get on with it

Is there anything about SKYCITY that makes it different to other work places?

SKYCITY is a large entity. There is so much variety in our business and our size and scale sets us apart from the rest. There are so much opportunities to learn and develop here.

Where were you born/raised and how long have you lived in Auckland?

Devonport born and raised.

What do you get up to outside of work?

- Cycling, I rode from London-Amsterdam to raise money for Motor Neuron Disease

- Football (the round type!)

- Cricket

- Reading; Politics & Psychology
