We sat down with Andrew, Apprentice Refrigeration Technician to talk about his role, what it’s like to work in his team and more...
How long have you been in your current role?
I've been an Apprentice Refrigeration Technician for three years.
What other roles have you held at SKYCITY?
I have previously been a HVAC Trade Assistant.
How long in total have you worked at SKYCITY?
I began working at SKYCITY on January 2013 and have been here for six years.
Could you tell us a bit about your role?
My role is an apprentice is to learn the refrigeration trade and to become proficient in the installation, maintenance, servicing and commissioning of refrigeration and air conditioning plant and equipment at SKYCITY.
What do you enjoy most about it?
Working with the refrigeration team, there is always something interesting to work on and new things to learn.
What sorts of challenges do you encounter?
We have over 20 restaurants and bars at SKYCITY, so there are a lot of refrigeration plants that we need to look after. We never know what is going to happen next that we need to fix.
What did you do before you joined SKYCITY?
I’ve previously worked in Housekeeping at Pullman Hotel, Auckland.
What do you enjoy about working here?
SKYCITY itself has a very exciting environment where people come to enjoy themselves. It’s fun being part of that.
What would you say to anyone considering joining your team or applying for a job like yours?
You’ll need to have some experience working in an engineering field, it is always helpful if you have some mechanical skill to start with.
Which of SKYCITY’s employee benefit(s) do you enjoy most?
I enjoy the staff discount in our restaurants at SKYCITY and the $2.50 staff meals at our 24/7 employee restaurant is a good deal.
Is there anything about SKYCITY that makes it different to other work places?
SKYCITY has a really strong Health and Safety Department and they implement ways to keep everyone safe. SKYCITY also provides health insurance benefits for employees.
Where were you born/raised and how long have you lived in Auckland?
I was born in Indonesia. I came to New Zealand in November 2010, so I have been here for almost nine years.
What do you like to get up to outside of work?
I like watching movies, reading manga, travelling and photography.
