Meet Cody Jones, Revenue Audit Administrator, SkyCity Adelaide

Meet Cody, Revenue Audit Administrator at SkyCity Adelaide. He’s been with us for six months and we caught up with him to talk about his role and what it’s like to be a part of our Finance team! Keep on reading below to find out.

Current role and length of time in that role

Revenue Audit Administrator – 6 months

What does your current role entail?

My role involves a lot of report running and data collation. We use this information to produce reconciliations, which we then use to find and investigate variances that may indicate issues we need to investigate further.

The end goal is to ensure that the data we pass on to the analysts/accountants/managers is as correct and accurate as possible.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

I really enjoy the strong developmental focus of the role, we are continuously looking to improve processes and procedures, be that within our team or within the wider business. There is also a heavy emphasis on personal development, which is especially valuable at this point in my career.

We work with almost all sides of the business in this role and that exposure is great. I’m quite lucky to work within a small, tight knit team that are super supportive and helpful, and I’m able to learn a lot from them.

What challenges do you face in your role? What do you think people should know before they apply for a job like this?

The main challenge I have faced in this role is the sheer amount of “stuff” there is to learn. The exposure is great, however it means that the amount of systems/procedures/data sources are multiplied, which can get confusing.

Because of the 24/7 nature of the business, simple things such as a “trading day”, can have multiple definitions depending on who you are talking to or which system you are looking at.

What qualifications do you have? Are they required for your role?

I am part way through a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance).

While the degree is not specifically required, my current role is very data heavy, so you need to be good with numbers. The ability to learn quickly and ask the right questions when you don’t understand something is critical.

However from working within the wider finance team, it’s clear that in order to advance my career I’ll need a formal qualification in the field.

It’s also quite useful to be studying and working in conjunction. Obviously, my studies are directly helpful to my role, but I’m also finding that the practical experience I’m getting at work helps with new concepts I come across at uni.

Your career experience prior to SkyCity

Before I started at SkyCity, I was a manager with ALDI supermarkets, and before that I flipped burgers at Hungry Jacks through high school.

What do you enjoy about working at SkyCity?

It’s quite exciting to be a part of a business that is going through such a major expansion, not many other workplaces can offer as many opportunities to learn and grow.

Which of SkyCity’s employee benefit(s) do you enjoy most?

Pitstop is amazing and is something that is not offered by many other employers. I also appreciate the discounted Metro Card recharges and parking.

What makes SkyCity different to other places you’ve worked (good or bad)?

SkyCity is different in that there are so many different functions all within the one building. My past jobs have very much been a one-sided operation.

For job seekers considering joining SkyCity, is there anything you think they need to be aware of?

One thing that makes SkyCity different to a lot of other workplaces is the 24/7 operation. You need to be aware that the work will keep coming, even when you’re not there.

Thanks for sharing your story Cody!
