I enjoy the fact that everyday is different and can be spent with different people across various departments.’

What's your current role and length of time in that role?

Health & Safety Consultant Almost 3 months

What does your current role entail?

Completing assessments, trainings and working on initiatives predominantly in the injury prevention and ergonomics space. My current portfolio is Food & Beverage and Gaming; however happy to help across any departments that could benefit from anything injury prevention related.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

It is always much more enjoyable working to prevent injuries rather than reacting to them. I enjoy the fact that everyday is different and can be spent with different people across various departments.

What challenges do you face in your role? What do you think people should know before they apply for a job like this?

Something that has been eye-opening to me is the size, number and variety of departments within SkyCity. Also, due to the 24/7 nature of the business combined with the fact that our Auckland H&S team run 2.5 hours ahead of us here in Adelaide – I would recommend that anyone completing a similar role at least have their work phone set to silent when they go to bed at night to save a couple of hours sleep!

What qualifications do you have? Are they required for your role?

Bachelor of Human Movement and Masters in Occupational Therapy. The Allied Health component will allow me to complete internal assessments, trainings and projects that SkyCity would have previously referred externally for.

Your career experience prior to SkyCity:

Most recently I was at EML as a Workplace Risk Advisor/Occupational Therapist for the past 5 years and prior to that was De Poi Consulting and Domiciliary Care. I also had the opportunity to work as a clinical OT on an acute ward of a Community Hospital just out of Oxford, U.K. while travelling.

What do you enjoy about working at SkyCity?

Everyone has been extremely welcoming and helpful so far and it has been a fun/exciting culture to be a part of. The employee benefits are great, and as much as I enjoy sitting in my little corner in the H&S office, I am looking forward to the Back of House open plan office refurbishment that is on its way.

Which of SkyCity’s employee benefit(s) do you enjoy most?

I have already had a crack at most of the employee benefits… had a few pairs of pants dry-cleaned which was great, bought and loaded up a Metro Card which I still have not come close to using but hopefully will someday, purchased a couple of discounted Gold Class tickets to win some brownie points at home, $10 parking, and of course loaded up my plate at Pitstop on any given day… sometimes twice.

What makes SkyCity different to other places you’ve worked (good or bad)?

This is the first place I have worked where people are buying a pint of beer at 08:30 as I am buying my morning coffee… but the general excitement and energy that comes with working at an entertainment establishment such as SkyCity is quite contagious and difficult to ignore, especially with the exciting projects well on their way towards completion. Good times ahead!
