Anita, Administration Lead - HR Operations at SkyCity Auckland

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve shared a few profiles from our LGBTTI+ employees at SkyCity Auckland. To mark off the last day of Auckland Pride month, we caught up with Anita Butler, Administration Lead - HR Operations at SkyCity Auckland. She leads our HR Helpdesk team, which is a point of contact for employees and managers for HR administration and queries.

When asked what SkyCity’s Rainbow Tick accreditation meant to her, she says “The Rainbow Tick accreditation means a lot. For me it demonstrates SkyCity’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace - it’s a place where I can just be me”.

Briefly describe your current role

When I joined SkyCity, my role was new within the HR Operations team. I lead the HR Helpdesk, which is a point of contact for employees and managers for HR administration requests and queries. Alongside this, I look after ensuring our processes are efficient and build relationships with key stakeholders to enable us deliver to the business. I am also proud to be part of the SkyCity Pride Committee here at SkyCity

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

It is the people I work with and meet every day. This is my first time in the tourism and hospitality industry - the organisation is big and learning about how we operate is fascinating. I really enjoy the atmosphere around the whole place and I have quickly felt part of the SkyCity family.

What sorts of challenges do you encounter?

The Helpdesk looks after requests and queries from across the Auckland site so understanding how we operate and the differences between the departments has been a challenge. Thankfully I have a very supportive team who have helped guide me to the right people to learn about the business.

Tell us about some of your career highlights at SkyCity

A highlight for me has been joining the SkyCity Pride Committee so early on. Becoming part of the Rainbow Community here at SkyCity was an important factor for me when deciding to join the company and I have been lucky to join a great group of people so early on in my career here.

What did you do before you joined SkyCity?

Late in 2018 I had the chance to take a five month break – I had been doing my previous role for six years within the FMCG industry and decided it was the right opportunity to take some time for myself. Before starting at SkyCity, I completed a short contract within the Government sector.

What do you enjoy about working at SkyCity?

The ability to be proactive and make a difference. Processes are a big part of my role so having the ability to explore new ways of doing things with the team to ensure that we can be as efficient as possible is important.

What would you say to anyone considering joining your team or applying for a job like yours?

The Helpdesk is a busy team and no two days are the same! There is a lot to learn with our processes and the role we play means we have many touch points across the business however we work together as a team to deliver our services.

What does SkyCity’s Rainbow Tick accreditation mean to you?

The Rainbow Tick accreditation means a lot. For me it demonstrates SkyCity’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace - it’s a place where I can just be me.

Which of SkyCity’s employee benefit(s) do you enjoy most?

The discount at our Food & Beverage outlets – I already had some favourite places before joining SkyCity but have since discovered a few more!

Where were you born/raised and how long have you lived in Auckland?

I grew up in the Cotswolds area of the UK in a place called Cirencester. I spent my school years there before moving to Liverpool for University which was an ideal choice as I am a big Liverpool FC fan! After university I spent time travelling before arriving in NZ on a one-way ticket – I quickly settled into the Kiwi lifestyle and 10 years later I am still here!

What do you do outside of work?

I love spending time baking or getting out in the garden as well as watching the English Premier League in the early hours each weekend. Outside of the home I play indoor netball and like to get out and about with my camera.
