We recently caught up with Adam Kelly, Legal Counsel who shared some amazing insights about working at SkyCity and what he does to manage his wellbeing and work/life balance.
What do you enjoy the most about your role and working at SkyCity?
I really enjoy the challenges that come from tackling a wide variety of unique legal work at SkyCity – I consider myself a true ‘generalist’ lawyer here.
I find the work at SkyCity intellectually and morally stimulating and you’d be hard pressed to find a legal role in New Zealand which deals with a more diverse and complex range of issues. SkyCity has given me the platform to advance my career and I’ve made some lifelong friends along the way – I’m genuinely grateful for that.
What have you found at SkyCity that makes it different from other workplaces?
There is a big difference between being a private firm lawyer and an in-house lawyer – instead of protecting the interests of a large number of high profile clients at a law firm, I now do that for just one client in SkyCity.
I also navigate a number of competing interests now – it’s not always straightforward to balance acting in the best interests of SkyCity, ensuring SkyCity operates in a legally compliant manner and upholding my ethical obligations as practicing lawyer. There are some other notable differences which have worked in my favour – the lunch options at SkyCity are second to none and I don’t have to work amongst lawyers all day!
How do you manage your wellbeing and work/life balance?
Those who know me well enough know that I’m cricket obsessed. I’ve played cricket in the same team at the mighty East Coast Bays Cricket Club for the last 15 years and this has been instrumental in me maintaining physical and mental wellbeing. I’ve recently joined my Club’s Board and am enjoying giving back to the Club after so many years of representation.
I actually started up a SkyCity indoor cricket team a couple of years ago, if anyone out there is interested in forming a team again then let me know.
Outside of cricket I’m generally a sports fanatic and enjoy exploring new cuisines and dabbling on the guitar. I’m a big believer in work/life balance and the importance of weaving extra-curricular activity throughout ones working life – I find that SkyCity is very supportive of this balance and we shouldn’t take that for granted!
