Meet Matt, Logistics Supervisor at SkyCity Auckland

Meet Matt, our Logistics Supervisor at Skycity Auckland. He first started with us in 2008, starting off in our Food & Beverage department as a busser for the casino floor bars. Keep on reading as we find out what he enjoys about his role and what keeps him busy outside of work.

What do you enjoy the most bout your role and working at SkyCity?

The main thing I enjoy working as a Supervisor for Logistics has always been the staff I work with. There is such a wide range of staff with different backgrounds and from different parts of the world that I am always learning new things on a personal level.

I get to talk to people from across the business as well as people who work in other businesses that supply products and services to SkyCity. Some of them I have known since I started in Food & Beverage in 2008, and some I might just meet for the first time today.

I love how SkyCity really is like a little city. For it to succeed, the support services such as Logistics, Cleaning and Property Solutions all have to be working together so that customer facing staff members can provide the service that makes customers want to come back and enjoy our hospitality.

What have you found at SkyCity that makes it different from other workplaces?

SkyCity has provided me with numerous opportunities for training and career progression all while providing staff benefits such as discounted parking and meals while on shift and discounted products and services when visiting. No other workplace has provided me with such extensive benefits and perks.

We are a 24/7 business which means there are jobs available that suit different lifestyles based on what hours you can work, what abilities you have and what you are wanting for the future. The opportunities are far reaching compared to workplaces that have 9 to 5 hours and no dedicated or active learning and development program.

How do you manage your wellbeing and work/life balance?

In the last few years I began riding a motorcycle. I had no idea that this would become a big part of my life outside of work. It requires a lot of thought and attention when riding up Highway 16 or navigating the twists and turns when you are doing a night run of the Coromandel Loop. In a sense, the attention required is relaxing because it is in the moment rather than dwelling on it.

The main thing that keeps my work/life balance in check is getting to go home to my young grandson who we are caregivers for, and going to work so that I can continue to be a positive role model in his life.
