This week we meet one of the new members of our Senior Leadership Team, Nirupa George, our Chief Corporate Affairs Officer.
How long have you been at SkyCity?
I started at SkyCity near the end of June – so I am very much a newbie to the SkyCity whānau.
What was your role prior to working at SkyCity?
Just before I joined SkyCity, I was Chief of Staff for Auckland Mayor, Phil Goff. As Chief of Staff, I was responsible for the managing the Mayoral Office and its staff and also leading the execution of the Mayor’s political vision. I’ve also worked in Parliament as a political advisor but before entering politics, I started my career as a refugee and humanitarian lawyer.
What excites you about working at SkyCity?
COVID has been really trying for our industry but with that also comes opportunities. This is a good chance for the business to think about how we want to build into the future. In my role, I am excited about making sure we make the most of those future opportunities.
What do you enjoy the most about your new role?
One of the most important things about my role is knowing the different experts in the business. That means I have spent the last three weeks meeting people from all the different departments and units. That has been really great, and I am really enjoying that part of my job.
How do you manage your wellbeing and achieve work/life balance?
For me, it’s about doing things that ground me outside of work. I always go to my parent’s house for bit of a break (because nothing beats your parents cooking for you!). I also bake to de-stress and on Sundays, I’m a volunteer teacher at Poonga, which is a community school that aims to help new migrant and refugee children and families settle in New Zealand.
