Meet Ying from our Scheduling team at SkyCity Auckland. The Scheduling team is an integral part of our business, they ensure staff labour coverage to meet our business needs through the rostering of staff. They assist departments with workforce planning, roster and labour management along with a host of other important roles. We catch up with Ying below to find out more about her journey at SkyCity…
What do you enjoy the most about your role and working at SkyCity?
Working in Scheduling, I enjoy being able to be an important part of this workplace. When I was looking after Food and Beverage departments, I booked staff to cover business requirement across Auckland outlets. I make sure I get the right person to do the right hours in the right place for a smooth operation. I make sure the rosters are in line with our enterprise agreement. I also make sure the labour cost is accurate and try to keep things efficient. In June 2021, I was promoted to Senior Scheduling Administrator-System Support. I have gained proficiency in all areas of the rostering systems. I actively promote better processes with the managers and outlets using the Kronos system, use proficiency to discover if opportunities exist to develop and extend things further. All these make me feel very valuable in the business, I am very proud of myself, and I enjoy all the ongoing challenges.
What have you found at SkyCity that makes it different from other workplaces?
SkyCity is such a big family full of love and a great workplace for me to grow and be a team player. When I had my heart surgery in 2016, you can’t imagine how many messages I have received from my colleagues. From all those messages or people visiting me in person, I felt their care, love and there is no other workplace I can get this kind of feeling, at least not up till now in my life.
How do you manage your wellbeing and work/life balance?
Plan ahead, be organised. Because of my health I need to regularly visit my specialist and do a health review, I try to plan it around my work hours. Outside of work, I exercise regularly so that I continue to be energetic to work and enjoy my personal life. I am lucky enough to have a thoughtful boss and an amazing team. If I need time off for family or health issues, they always offer to cover my workload. We look after each other, they constantly try to help if there is anything can be done to support my wellbeing.
Take a vacation, make myself away from work. While my job is important, it shouldn’t be my entire life. I make time for myself and my loved ones. Set boundaries and work hours. When I finish work, I avoid thinking about upcoming projects or answering emails. I always set achievable goals by implementing time-management strategies, a to-do list is my best friend at work.
